today i was officiating for the WALA track and field competition for the 3 nations, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.
And i noticed something interesting while I was officiating the long jump competition for the under-15 girls category.
There were 6 competitors altogether.
the Australian jumpers got 3rd and 5th respectively.
As i was walking back to the call room after the competition, another aussie girl and their coach/team manager walked towards the 2 jumpers...
Aussie girl : so how was it?
jumper 1 : i got 3rd...
With eyes wide open...
Aussie girl : Wow, well done!! that was really good!
after awhile...
Coach : i was watching you gals from here just now, so how was the results?!
Jumper 2 : 5th.
Coach smilez and beaming with assurance ...
Coach : Well. that was a job well done! good job!
and then the two hugz.
well.. i was only wondering if we are also that accepting, appreciative and encouraging to our local athletes...
Anyway, haha different locations of cos different cultures.
it's also these cultural differences that make us feel so different from the ang mohs.. ;)
They are generally more enterprising, confident and possess higher self-esteem.
i do believe up-bringing also plays a part.
a curious kid was climbing up a tree outside the house...
An ang moh father opened the door and saw his son fidgeting on the tree,
Father : Son! Com'on u can do even better! Go a notch higher!
;p
on the other hand, if a chinese father sees a similar scene, he would most probably say...
Father : 你他妈的跟我滚下来!
Son : ...
lol i think that's the difference.
